Este novo Laboratório Associado, que resulta de uma parceria estratégica, construída e consolidada ao longo dos últimos anos entre o Instituto de Investigação em Ciências da Vida e Saúde (ICVS), ligado à Escola de Ciências da Saúde (ECS-UMinho), e o Grupo 3B’s – Biomateriais, Materiais Biodegradáveis e Biomiméticos (3B’s), ligado à Escola de Engenharia (EE-UMinho) terá as suas actividades centradas nas Ciências da Saúde, na sua vertente Biomédica e Clínica, e nas Ciências de Engenharias Biomédica e de Materiais (Biomateriais), com uma forte interface entre as Ciências da Saúde/Tecnologias.
O ICVS/3B’s – Laboratório Associado prosseguirá o objectivo de criar valor através do desenvolvimento de produtos e serviços inovadores, resultantes de investigação científica de excelência fortemente competitiva a nível internacional.
A parceria entre o ICVS – uma Unidade de Investigação em Biomedicina e Ciências Clínicas, articulando-se com uma vasta Rede de Unidades Prestadoras de Cuidados de Saúde – e o 3B’s – uma Unidade de Investigação em Tecnologias Aplicadas à Medicina Regenerativa, nomeadamente Biomateriais, Engenharia de Tecidos e Nanomedicina, líder do Instituto Europeu de Excelência em Engenharia de Tecidos e Medicina Regenerativa – associa duas Unidades de nível Excelente (de acordo com a avaliação por painéis internacionais da FCT).
Trata-se de um consórcio de duas Unidades de I&D complementares e com grande potencial de crescimento, representando uma oportunidade singular em Portugal para estimular a inovação e para desenvolver investigação clínica e de translação de forma aplicada, estruturada e ajustada aos desafios actuais e futuros na área das ciências e tecnologias da saúde. Adicionalmente, o ICVS/3B’s – Laboratório Associado oferece um elevado potencial para criar valor através do desenvolvimento de produtos e serviços altamente inovadores, e uma oferta educativa de pós-graduação de excelência reconhecida a nível internacional, particularmente nas áreas ligadas à Biomedicina, Engenharia de Tecidos, à Medicina Regenerativa, à Nanomedicina e à Clínica, com impacto, não só na Universidade do Minho, mas também certamente na rede nacional de I&D, e no tecido empresarial, aos níveis regional, nacional e internacional. O ICVS/3B´s tem como objectivo competir de forma ganhadora com o que de melhor existe nas suas áreas de intervenção a nível internacional.

The directory board of the ICVS/3B?s – Associated Laboratory hereby announces the creation of this new R&D structure within the Portuguese System of Science and Technology. This is the first Associated Laboratory totally based on groups from the University of Minho.
This new Associated Laboratory results from a strategic partnership built and consolidated over the past years between the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), linked to the School of Health Sciences (ECS-UM), and the 3B´s Group – Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics (3B’s), linked to the School of Engineering (EE-UM). Its activities will be centered on Health Sciences, namely in Biomedical and Clinical research, and on
Sciences of Biomedical Engineering and Engineering of Materials (Biomaterials), with a strong Health Sciences/Technologies interface.
The ICVS/3B’s – Associated Laboratory will pursue the goal of generating value through innovative products and services, resulting from excellent and internationally competitive scientific research.
The Partnership between the ICVS – a Research Unit in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, articulated with a wide network of Health Care Units – and the 3B’s – a Research Unit in Technologies applied to Regenerative Medicine, namely Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Nanomedicine, leader of the European Institute of Excellence in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine – links two units evaluated as “Excellent” (according to the FCT’s international evaluation panels).
This is an association of two complementary R&D units with a high growth potential, representing a singular opportunity in Portugal to stimulate innovation and to develop Clinical and Translational Research. Furthermore, the ICVS/3B’s – Associated Laboratory offers a high potential to generate value through the development of highly innovative products and services, as well as post-graduate training of international standard, particularly in the areas linked to Biomedicine, Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Nanomedicine and Clinical Sciences, impacting not only the University of Minho, but also the national R&D network and the entrepreneurship at the regional, national and international levels. The ICVS/3B’s aims to compete with the best institutions in this scientific area at the international level.
